Yamaha site says dry weight is 3298 (although there was another review site that showed it at 3519). I'm not even sure if that includes the wake tower either. I can obviously do the math to estimate gas and water, but have no clue as to the weight of the trailer, etc. I figure it's easier to see if anyone else has actually weighed it. I know how quickly it can add up after that. We are planning to buy the 242 for this season but we want to be ABSOLUTELY sure our truck can tow it safely, especially buying our last boat and then having to buy a new tow vehicle a month later. Our 2008 Avalanche is rated at 7200 lbs but has trouble with transmission overheating when pulling over any sort of incline. So if the 242 is about the same loaded weight as our last boat, we can probably get away with just adding an aftermarket tranny cooler. Otherwise we've gotta start truck shopping too. Thanks _________________ Tow Vehicle: 08 Chev Avalanche (1500)

If you don't have a trailering package (includes the transmission cooler), you need to add that and you would be good to go. Any engine/tranny without adequate cooling is going to suffer when pulling these loads uphill. But a good cooler will help with that problem except maybe on a summer day pulling out of death valley, then I don't know. But the tow rig is quite capable with a trailering package. _________________ |

Boat=3300, trailer we will guess at 1500 still leaves 1,320# for fluids, gears, etc. You should have no concerns with the weight rating _________________ |

Look in your glove box sticker for the code KNP (I believe that's the code)...that's the code for external transmission cooler. It's not standard. _________________

But you need it to pull anything of much mass...that engine/tranny will pull a truck its own weight fully loaded, but you will have to keep the tranny fluid cool. Oh...another important point...if you are going up/down hill, put it in Drive and not Overdrive...too much up/down shifting will overheat the fluid as well. _________________ |

Turns out that it's not an uncommon issue, and pretty much mandatory to buy an auxiliary transmission cooler for this truck/trans. The truck has plenty of power when towing, and engine stays cool even though we are in AZ where we tow from the 110 temps to the 100 temps just to "cool off". It's just the darn transmission that gets hot not the engine (to do with cooling both fluids off the radiator, etc). Gotta love Chevy's! I'd buy a Toyota, but those don't stop, LOL!. So we'll be adding the cooler asap. Anyway, you've all been so friendly, helpful and welcoming to a "newbie" and it is much appreciated. Rest assured I'll be reading up Warmest _________________ Tow Vehicle: 08 Chev Avalanche (1500) |

These truck will pull well over their weight and that goes for the big SUV's (tahoe/yukon/suburban/expedition/etc.) as well. _________________ |

Guy does great work and this would be a fairly common request for his shot. They work on mostly corvette's and other GM vehicles... PM me or e-mail me brian.f.zettler@chase.com _________________

I actually bought the kit online & it should arrive next week. I'll shoot you an email to get the shop info and see if he'll do the labor on it (beyond my automotive talents). I pulled my boat today at 70 degrees w/ my '07 Avy w/ Tow package (4.10s and Tranny cooler). Mostly flat, but each time I checked the tranny temp it was 165, which is what it's about normally. Still, the OEM tranny cooler is not all that great - you're probably better off with an aftermarket unit. |
